DIGITAL DILEMMA- Exploring the intricacies of technology overuse and digital wellbeing tools.

This research delves into the paradox of using technology to solve the very problems it creates, with a particular focus on digital wellbeing. Central to this study is the creation of a provocative artefact—a talking phone paired with a digital wellbeing app designed to mock and critique current wellbeing solutions. This artefact is not just a tool but a statement, highlighting the irony and contradictions inherent in many of today’s digital wellbeing strategies. By adopting a Research through Design approach, this work challenges conventional thinking, aiming to stimulate meaningful debate and reflection on the true effectiveness of these tools in managing digital overuse.

The study uncovers that while digital wellbeing apps may offer some benefits, their overall impact is often limited and superficial. These tools, which are intended to reduce screen time and promote healthier digital habits, can paradoxically contribute to the problem by encouraging more interaction with technology. This research questions whether these apps are genuinely effective or if they merely perpetuate the cycle of digital dependency. By mocking the current solutions, the study brings to light the need for a more critical examination of how digital wellbeing is approached and the potential flaws in relying on technology to fix issues caused by itself. Unmasking the irony, this research asks: Can technology truly solve the digital addiction it creates, or is it just part of the problem?

Ultimately, this research advocates for the exploration of alternative, non-technological strategies for achieving digital wellbeing. It emphasizes the importance of user-centric design that genuinely prioritizes wellbeing, going beyond simple monitoring and restriction of device usage. The findings suggest that future approaches should focus on creating a healthier relationship with technology, one that does not rely on more technology as a solution. This work paves the way for future research and practical methods aimed at advancing digital wellbeing in a more holistic and effective manner.
